Sitting in front of the River

Siting in front of the river,
his eternal look bespeaks of his creator.
In the backdrop of the rough canvas,
on a leafless bough it perches.
finding his perpetual, niche forever.

His everlasting stay.
the parlour of  my home.
Looking for whom ?
His painter in the capital city
or the one who bought him for thousand rupees ?

A thought of the brain
of a poor painter.
Sold for a few rupees
to burn the kitchen fires.
Glory versus family!
Suitable for a headline
in a weekend newspaper

How can I forget the look

he gave when the bargain was done ?
Yet, will his fame give his son
a pair of tennis shoes
or tuition fees for elder one ?
At least a sustegen for his
wife with a cancer ?

  4. Sorry I'm late. I can't imagine why I didn't see this before. There seems to be some blogger problem these days as everyone is saying.

Well, this is fantastic. You have gone way beyond an art critic's point of view this time, making it narrow, huh. Who else would see through the work of art the way you did, I wonder.

    Great!

    "Looking for whom ?

these days nobody has idea about the value of painting and painters. The world has become digital :O

  12. I am very, very sorry.I was not well in the past few days.(Tonsillitis and gastritis !) I came online today and your comments were waiting for moderation. I am happy that you have grasped the hidden meaning of the poem. I was ashamed when I did the bargain but only Rs. 1000.00 were left in my hand. When I hung the painting on my wall, the look of the kingfisher gave me the seed for a poem.

  13. I'm sorry that I couldn't come this way early ! I'm so happy to read your blog. I went through most of the posts. this poem brought me many memories from the past, and I was numb for a moment ! thank you so much. painters sitting under the Mara trees on the pavements of the road in front of national art gallery, came into my mind. Poverty has overcome creativity ! keep up with the good work blue lotus .. I admire your poetry very much.
